Baby pacifier question?

My 2 mth old baby likes to settle with a pacifier, but spits it out regularly (then cries to get it back) Why do they spit it out in the first place? Could it be a sign that the pacifier is getting too small for her? Would it help to go to a 3 mth size (despite her being younger)??
