Midterm question " poetry is the soul of mankind"?

I hve to write a page and a half easy for my English cl on the quote "poetry is the soul of mankind" what does it mean?!?! And that's just the question then I need to elaborate on it! Please help anything is helpfull:) thanks in advance:)
