Have Christian denominations been pushing the brainwashing boundaries over the centuries?

Have they been steadily escalating the nonsense which they manipulate their flocks of fools to believe? Did all the dogmatic nonsense that is today ociated with Christianity, start out small, gradually increase then go through a dramatic exponential rise? Have some Christian denominations experimented with really bizarre dogma, but like Icarus, they flew too close to the sun, the wax on their wings melted and they crashed down to earth?
