My garage door opener does not work, but the switch on the door does. I have changed batteries in the remote.?

The remote for the garage door in my car won't work, but I can get the door up and down using the switch on the wall. I changed batteries in the remote. It had just suddenly stopped working, and the remote did not get damaged in any way. It is a fairly new Genie garage door opener.
