Why do the rebel troopers in Star Wars wear the helmets with visors that don't go over their faces?

My 9 year old son is a StarWars expert practically and this question's been bugging him. The helmets have "blast visors" but don't seem to protect the guys from anything. I know it's just a costume but does anyone know why they were designed this way?
